teuila postcards

Teuila Postcards
A Polytoxic Dance Company Production

Efeso Fa'anana
Leah Shelton
Lisa Fa'alafi

Teuila Postcards is a tongue in cheek look at the oppression and evolution of an island. It’s a remarkable fusion of traditional Polynesian and contemporary dance theatre. Set in Samoa, Teuila Postcards tells the story of three tourists who travel to a fantasy island expecting an exotic holiday but instead get a lesson in history, culture and movement. Brisbane based dance ensemble Polytoxic Dance Company unveil the cultural reality of Polynesia with an episodic ride of postcard-like vignettes. Mix in bright gorgeous costumes and frame each image with a clever, ever-changing set, and you have Polytoxic's holiday postcard to you from Samoa.

*image and synopsis from Teuila Postcards

As part of Planet IndigeUS at Harbourfront Centre, I went to see the Teuila Postcards. Despite the ten extra minutes of waiting due to technical difficulties, it was definitely worth the wait. The show was amazing. It was intriguing to learn about Fa'afafine, a third gender Samoan culture encourages. They are biologically men who were raised to assume female gender roles and because of their unique nature, they are prominent in numerous fields of work in the Samoan society. In Korea, often sons were much favoured than daughters. The gender of the child is not a huge concern nowadays, but seeing Samoan culture's Fa'afafine, I guess having daughters were more of an issue, if you have to raise a boy as a girl. lol. It is an interesting subject. They are not necessarily homosexual, but has both male and female characteristics, thus can become a huge advantage in many aspects. During the performance, Efeso (Fa'afafine role) mentions he went to college with football scholarship, but appears as a drag queen on stage. It is difficult to understand at first, but always fascinating to learn about a different cultures. Plus, the mix of Samoan and contemporary dances made it so much more exciting.

Julian Beever

I often stumble upon a chalk drawing when I visit Dunas Square. The chalk artist's fave seems to be the infamous Mona Lisa or Batman.. but then it always reminds me of Julian Beever and his anamorphosis trompe-l'œil chalk drawings. I'd love to see them in person. Hope he makes his way to the Dundas Square one of these days and teach the Mona Lisa chalk artist a lesson on his illusive drawings, just a thought..... :-)

It's one thing to draw a mural, but this really takes careful perspective calculations. Too bad they won't last long on pavements...

Feeding the fish.

Waste of Water.

Little and Large.

Taking the plunge.

Worldcard in Istanbul.

Make Poverty History drawing was requested by Live8 to support the pressure campaign on the G8 in Edinburgh. It was done in Edinburgh City Centre.

The same Make Poverty History drawing from the side : it was 13m (40 feet) long.

Reminisce

Flowers are lovely gifts, despite its short lifespan.
Most likely, it will end up in a trash can, but the memories won't.
Just like this photo I found on my computer.. reminding me of the first blue rose I had got. Photographs are tricky that way...
Reminding things that was almost forgotten....
The lack of practicality makes flowers more beautiful, I think.
It's a pleasant surprise because the memory doesn't always die with it.

so it begins...

Toronto summer hasn't arrived yet. Still? or has it already passed (with it's short week of blazing sun back in July)? I can't decide what to wear for this rather cool summer, constantly thinking it feels like autumn... and that I should begin my knitting projects...

Once again, looking through Etsy, I found many pretty patterns to try this time..

I want to make them all!!!!!!!!!
Think I will try one of those neck warmer types this year... or a shawl... I've been making too many cable scarves... it's beginning to pile up in my closet. Ahhhhh too many things to do........

Perhaps, with the arrival of knit-master in mid September, I will explore and learn to knit sweaters.. or something that is more sophisticated than scarves... Can't wait!!!

e t s y things

Ever since I was introduced to a little, well big, website of Etsy, it became a routine to check out cute things when there's nothing else to do but kill time. The thing about Etsy is that.... it is way too temping. All those fashionable one-of-a-kind clothes and must-have handcrafted mug cupsgs are just a click away, taking my money unnoticed from my plastic. It's hard to say no, when you find something that just seems perfect.

Sudlow, Acorn and Leaf Ring. $90US

Alas!
a perfect acorn necklace!!

BeadinBabe, Acorns are Falling- Organic stem and leaf necklace, verdigris patina with a dangling acorn. $28.50US

I love browsing through jewelry section.. (who doesn't?)
Not only it pleases my eyes with sparkling ideas but it's an inspiration for my future creations. The more and more I look, the more I want to run to craft store and buy all the beads and start my own handmade jewelry Etsy shop. ooooooohhhhh~

PatrickIrlaJewelry, Hydrangea Blossom and Diamond Ring. soldout

Maybe I should unsubscribe to the email listing, that way I can control my temptations..
I am looking for the right coffee cup for my morning coffees and teas. Currently, I have a boring, plain blue cup from IKEA and it is not working out for me. I've been searching for the perfect coffee cup for a while now. Maybe I'm too picky..? well, a time spent drinking a cup of coffee should be enjoyed by all senses, I say. So being visually pleasing is essential. After looking over 161 pages of mugs, I found...

retrogalusa, polka dot percy peacock loses a feather teacup. $9US

alinahayes, Coffee Lovers Oval Cup. $21US

lukaluka, Funny birds mug. $15US

pikahue, Orange circle mug. $25US

Now I can't decide!!!!!!! They are all adorable!!!!
And probably by the time I decide to purchase, they will be gone... :,(

accentcph, Chandelier Mugs. $36US
Would be cute matching cups for cc and me... hee hee

Maybe one of those will be my first purchase on Etsy, hopefully. Or find an alternative at some cute shops along Queen st. As effective Etsy may be, it is too addictive. I admire all the crafty people for their work. It's something I'd like to do too, if I had the time. As long as there's Etsy, I will be there, looking, clicking, tempted....... sigh*

and for something funny and interesting...click me!

cute as a button

It's been a month last I saw Milly,
my cute, lovely shih-poo.
Poodles are one of the smartest dog breeds but Shih tzu are actually one of the dumber ones..
so.. that makes Milly.... half bright.. lol
but nevertheless, she's lovely, friendly and adorable.
though she's afraid of lot of things.. especially other dogs... but we are working on that :)

She was so tiny when we first met,
just about 2 months old.. size of my hand.. a little bigger.

Now she weighs wopping 15lbs.. for a small breed dog... that's kinda fat..
My mom feeds her snacks as she demands, tho I tell her it's not very good.
but how can you resist that cute puppy eyes?
I can't..

She has 2 distinctive poses she often does:
1. superman pose
2. the curl

It's so cute how she rolls up in a ball..
Makes her look like a cushion.. lol...

The best part of having a dog is to take her out for a walk..
Because of Milly, I became sort of a morning person.
But now that she's back with my parents, I began to sleep in.. not good..
come back Milly~

hee..
she looks like she's break dancing.. lol

She's coming back September and I can't wait!
Over the years of living on my own, I think Milly's been the best roommate so far..
for me... you are perfect!
