Ueda makes picture of girls. Not innocent girls or defenceless girls or even seductive girls. Fuco Ueda paints guilty girls, aggressive girls, seduced girls. There’s certainly an element of sweetness in her work. To the point where the honey literally drips form the flowers. But in her pictures sweetness becomes strength. Her girls don’t seem to need anybody else. They are each other’s friends. And they do whatever they please. In the process they may arouse us and confuse us. But in the end, the only pleasure they care about is their own. And they leave us, the viewer, to care about their pain. [interview from April 2009] - Japan, [Fuco Ueda]

her paintings are disturbing yet beautiful. i read that she was sexually assaulted and bullied in her youth. i personally don't think i can ever express my trauma through art that public will see and engage with. some, if not all, of her paintings reveal hatred.. no... abhorrence.. of men and those who bullied her in school. this reminded me of steig larsson's the girl with the dragon tattoo... i hear about it in the news of teenagers or even younger girls who become the victim of an abominable crime, but to think that someone close or even myself had to experience it....... i can't even imagine. the smudges on the paintings look much like tear stains to me.. her works are truly brave and amazing... i bow to her courage.
