bye bye coffee... for now

burton's imagination

i went to see tim burton exhibition at tiff lightbox yesterday, despite toronto's freeeeeezing and crazy snowy weather. -27degrees... bbbbrrrr

as one of moma's most popular and successful exhibition, i had high hopes for this exhibition. at the end.. i had mixed feelings about the show, but overall, i was pleased with the exhibition. i wish that the gallery was more spacious to accommodate the artworks.

no pictures allowed... so i only got a shot of the entrance... my faves were night mare before christmas drawing of jack and his skeleton dog/reindeer, edward scissorhands' costume by colleen atwood (which johnny depp wore, omg!) and the corpse bride characters line up by carlos and jordi grangel and carles burges manes. i really really really want the entire drawing in frame. it was simply mesmerizing.

also one of my precious books is the melancholy death of oyster boy and its characters. i loved the replicas of the characters in the book. where can i buy the figurines??? >_<

i came home and read the stories again.... i will never really understand what he really wants to say, but i'd like to think this is a fairytale for grown ups. sometime during our lives, at some point we all feel like stain boy or the girl who stares. for that reason, this simple book has such deeper meaning to it than it seems.

it simply amazes me the way burton creates his own world where all his creatures come from. it is not just the way they are but the story behind each character. i really want to see what he thinks. just as eccentric his creations are, he too look quite odd. lol. i just love everything about it. looking forward to frankenweenie mr. burton!

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui & Antony Gormley: Sutra

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui & Antony Gormley: Sutra
Posted by Will Hudson, 21 January 2011

“Celebrated Flemish/Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui presents a brand new dance work inspired by the skill, strength and spirituality of Buddhist Shaolin monks. He has collaborated closely with Turner Prize-winning artist Antony Gormley, who has created a design consisting of 21 wooden boxes which are repositioned to create a striking, ever changing on-stage environment.”

Madrid's Beach Garbage Hotel is a liveable art installation made from garbage washed up or dumped on European beaches; the trash has been sterilized and used to build a centrally located hotel with five double rooms (all rooms are free -- though there are no toilets or other plumbing). The artist, Ha Schult, says, "I created the Beach Garbage Hotel because the oceans of our planet are the biggest garbage dump."
